This October, the Deputy Attorney General, Lisa Monaco announced a new Civil Cyber-Fraud Initiative being deployed by the government. The Federal Government will now be using their civil enforcement tools to pursue companies when they fail to follow required cybersecurity standards. This is a tool that they have to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used appropriately to guard against public misuse and create public trust.
“For too long, companies have chosen silence under mistaken belief that is less like less risky to hide a breach and to bring it forward and report.” – The Deputy Attorney General, Lisa Monaco
The companies that the Deputy Attorney General referred to are government contractors who receive federal funds. She also goes on during the memorandum to say that the Civil Cyber-Fraud initiative would hold accountable entities or individuals that:
- Put information or systems at risk knowingly providing deficient cybersecurity products or services
- Knowingly misrepresenting their cybersecurity practice and protocols
- Knowingly violating obligations to monitor report cybersecurity incidents and breaches
We know that the businesses we work with may or may not work with the federal government. But many either work with the federal government or with corporate America at some level with our organization.
So this begs the question, why is it important to have a robust cybersecurity plan that’s fully functional or operational in place? Join our expert panel on the live webinar “Advantages Of Having A Cybersecurity Plan In Place & Dangers Of Operating Naked OS Environments+”
